MSc delivers converters for the world´s first spent nuclear fuel transfer vehicle

20.06.2024

MSc will deliver converters, motor drives and energy storage for the first nuclear fuel canister transfer and installation vehicle in the world. The canister installation vehicle, KSAA, will be used for transporting spent fuel canisters for disposal in the ONKALO repository at the site of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland. KSAA is a battery powered electric vehicle operating underground and is operated by the Finnish final disposal operator Posiva.

MSc’s solution includes the chargers and DCDC converters for charging and discharging the battery of the electric vehicle. MSc motor drives will handle the traction of the vehicle and lifting and moving the canisters. A 200-kWh energy storage system is also part of the delivery.

The converters have been designed to meet the highly demanding safety and quality criteria for operating long lifetime vehicles underground, including corrosion proof IP65 stainless steel enclosures. MSc was selected as the supplier because of its proven track record of producing reliable power electronics solutions for demanding environments.

Initial factory acceptance tests (FAT) were done at MSc premises and have now been completed with the installation vehicle.
